3D Printed 5600 NATO Adapters- Work In Progress

I was able to download a design for a fixed lug adapter. While I was at it I modified it to accept spring bars.

I tested the spring bar to the point of failure and it took quite a bit of force. More than I probably put my watches through.

I printed some out in blue plastic and the parts split at the springbar hole. I try the fixed bar version and that snapped in a different place.

I will print some more...

Edit: Adding source model referencing.

I should have done this from the start, but the model on which I based my designs can be found at: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3235664

I've made quite a few changes to this one, so it is now more my own than not. I should probably re-model the whole thing, but that takes learning something new...

Very cool bit of experimentation.

Looks like you can improve the strength of 3D prints by "annealing." These are just a couple quick google results:

I haven’t played with annealing yet and it might work well here. I hadn’t considered the process, so I thank you.

However, there are other ways to improve strength... design, material, pint temp, chemical smoothing, etc.

Here are the images from the latest tests. These printed at a different orientation and they broke at a new place! On the plus side, it looks like I'll need 2 sets of springbar holes, one for straps and the other for NATOS. Failing is good when you learn something in the process.

For some reason, wrist photos are too big...

Internally it could be tighter, but there problem with an unexpected gap that may be the culprit. I also printed it solid and hotter to improve strength.

I am not sure how that second set of holes will work, but I am wearing the watch on NATO now and it is OK. Not stressing it at the moment. I can destroy the adapters tomorrow.

This is looking quite promising!

Had a good laugh with that one. Hopefully I can keep making progress. Some design modifications will be needed before I can progress further, but the learning is still happening which is good.

Tried the second set of lug holes and it is better, but the lugs then stick out too much. Maybe something in between would work and then cut off the lugs shorter...

Moved the internal lug hole a bit to tighten up the space between the adapter/watch.

Trimmed a bit off of the lower part of the lug so it isn’t as clunky.

Printed in black and it looks pretty good to me. Some tweaking here and there would be nice, but it is functional.
This is with just one set of lug holes, so I need to try it with leather or a bracelet or something.

Should I be announcing a Kickstarter for this project soon?

Uh, no. If anyone has a 3D printer or knows someone with one then they could print some out. I will make the final files publicly available as they are based on someone else’s design, and that is what the license stipulates.

I don't.

Can I just send you some money for a couple of pairs?

Not a chance. I can’t take money from you. You are MOT!

Once I am done with the tweaks, send me a PM and I will send some off to you.

I will see if there is a way to make these available to non-beta tester types.

MOT and Boston Charlie can be my Beta testers. You guys can have some of the adapters for free if you provide feedback. Does that sound OK?
