Re: Amateur Strap Making Progress
From my untrained eye, your straps look fairly impressive. I'm enjoying watching the progression.

Re: Amateur Strap Making Progress
Very cool - do you have a list of the basic tools you use?
I've always wanted to make a distressed post-Apocalypse watchstrap....much easier to hide any deficiencies with no expectations!

Re: Amateur Strap Making Progress
Thanks. They are getting better, but you can find little things when you look closely. I don’t try to hide them, nor do I try to highlight them in my photos.ManOnTime wrote:From my untrained eye, your straps look fairly impressive. I'm enjoying watching the progression.

Rotary cutter
Razor scraper (skiving tips of leather)
Stencil (tapered straps)
Needles
Waxed thread .55mm mostly (Wuta)
Wuta 3mm pricking irons (punch holes for sewing)
Homemade stitching pony
Cheap $30 skiving/splitting machine from eBay. It’s not nice, but works for straps.
Cheap eBay edge beveler/grooved/creased (pretty junky, but bevels after sharpening)
Gum trag and canvas for burnishing
CS Osbourne punch set
It’s a lot that’s needed, so hardly worth it for just a few straps.
If you’re going for a chunky, pre-V, distressed look, definitely go for bigger thread and at least 4mm spacing. Lots of good info on r/leatherwork

Re: Amateur Strap Making Progress
Just read the thread from the start, and it seems like your strapmaking has gotten better even in that short time! Looking really good. I was expecting some real amateur looking straps/stitching, but am very happy to see that isn't the case! I am liking the fact that you are trying out some none standard designs, and look forward to picking up one of your straps down the road. I know you are just doing it as a hobby, but that doesn't mean we won't be interested in buying some!

Used an old distressed belt to make a strap for a mod with faux patina.

I just HAD to get those glue spots on the liner! Otherwise I think it’s my best yet.

That strap looks fantastic completed! I agree, best work yet. That is until your next project Seriously though, that is a GREAT looking strap. The stitching and edging look perfect, truly impressed.tennesseean_87 wrote:It’s done now.
