SUCCESSFUL: Kickstarter - Pompeak Watches

Post by Pompeak »

Hi Guys, Dave here from Pompeak watches.
We've recently launched a Kickstarter campaign, aiming to bring truely premium watches without the premium price (starting at £75)
And I don't mean cleverly marketed, cheaply made. I'm talking; sapphire crystal glass, 5 atm water resistance, in built shock resistance.
If you could take a look at our campaign and let me know what you think that would be awesome.

If you want to get in contact feel free to shoot a mail over to

Cheers,

Dave

I don’t see pics that really show the watches. Seems like marketing, which I understand, but you’re asking enthusiasts.

I think you need better pics of the watches.

Dave from Pompeak Watches contacted me and assured that he is looking for feedback on their product and wasn't fishing for sales.

Feel free to visit https://www.pompeak.com/, look around and let him (and all of us) know your thoughts.

Well this is all I'll really say about the matter.
I saw this project when it launched, but didn't feel a need to post about it.

Just came across like a run of the mill, "disrupting the industry," minimalist chrono.
Nothing compelling to share with our group in my opinion.

For improvements, I'd suggest more details about the specs of the watch - more case dimensions, which Japanese movement, etc would be helpful.

I agree...I just wrote a whole post with details about what could be improved as far as design decisions, etc, but I really don’t want to do their job for them. It seems like a “maximum effort” approach (see: Deadpool).

These seem like MVMT clones, which hurts the functionality. No number or anything on the dial will make it impossible read the chrono seconds, and the second hand isn't long enough even if there were numbers. Though now that I look at it, it seems like the chrono second is a subdial?

Also specifying which movement is being used would be nice. A VK67 would be much more appealing to me. From the one picture of the movement it doesn't look like this is being what's used.
I wish that watch were 38mm?

Agreed...its not so much a holistic design as it is more a collection of disparate things that someone's market research says will be differentiators. For example while the watch is rated to 5 ATM, how can it be read underwater with no lume? It has chrono function, but again not terribly usable without numbers and the hands not reaching the indices....seemingly more for aestetics.

My thoughts exactly. Who knows? Maybe it’s a good thing.

No specs = no interest = no purchase by Rob.

Pompeak vs MVMT...there does seem to be more than a coincidental resemblence.

Differences: MVMT has mineral glass, matching date window colors, no hash marks on the chrono dials and a slightly different logo. MVMT is also a direct seller, with similar pricing. To the untrained eye it appears that the guys at Pompeak have made a deal with the factory in China that makes MVMT watches to re-brand with their own logo and different subdials, and swap out for a sapphire crystal.

The watch is not to my tastes, but I will say technical detail about the project is sincerely lacking. I also don't see a unique value prop, just the same "no middle man" and "premium quality" messaging I see from lots of entry-level Kickstarters.

Technically, I will say the case looks much too large for the underlying movement. I will also say your watch bears much more than a passing resemblance to some very inexpensive ODM designs on AliX. Your case, pushers, crown, dial are all available for $10.

To my eye, this design lacks distinction. Simple as that.

It strikes me as a fashion watch, a category for which there is little evident interest on this board. Sport watches seem most popular here, with dress watches in second place.

Not sure if many of our members are in this brand's target demographic.
Just my $0.02 USD as always.
