Share An Out Of Reach Grail

Post by MoT »

I generally don't like to punish myself, but sometimes it can be cathartic.

Share a grail that is out of reach, and maybe someone will post an affordable alternative so you can scratch that itch.

Here's one of mine. Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur 1183-310/40. I'm smitten by this watch and have been so with UN's Marine line for a long, long time.

I've never owned a watch worth more than $500, so $6,900 is definitely out of reach. A boy can dream, though.

While technically, I could sell a large portion of my watches and get this, I couldn't justify it. It is JUST out of reach. With life changes, my expendable income isn't the same. If only I got into watches when I was younger and single, I could have a hell of a collection. Anyways, this is my current out of reach grail.

I tell myself my ultimate grail is a Rolex 1016, but I might be too nervous to wear it. One I lust over and would wear is the recent JLC Geophysic 1958 in stainless steel:

Retailed new for $9,800 and right around there on the used market still.
I wish that watch were 38mm?

Have you heard of Aidophedo?

https://www.sgshop.com/taobao/tao-bao/d ... d=50468001
or $300 on ebay
https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Big-Moonph ... 2495581399

I was highly considering one, but it's an auto.
And I don't want an auto moonphase.

Also the Christopher Ward Moonphase is between those, at $1600.

I have a list of Grail watches, but this one is one helluva watch. Maybe one day I'll buy it instead of a house...

The list of watch unobtanium is quite long for me, and one that recently landed on my radar is the Tudor Heritage Ranger:

I personally don’t like bund watch straps, but this watch looks perfect on one to me.

It’s relatively inexpensive compared to many other grails so it’s one I may save up for someday, but not likely anytime too soon.

Otherwise, I found that the LümTec C5 comes decently close to the Tudor for me:

Main difference being the hands, but the dial design is otherwise pretty close.

This is also a long-term goal of mine. You might also consider the Smiths (Timefactors) Everest. It's got sorta-kinda some heritage (at at least the same name) and looks pretty close to the Tudor. It comes in 40 and now 36mm. https://www.timefactors.com/smiths.htm

I've heard of Smiths and I'm glad you brought it up! They offer a lot of watch for a good price. I also didn't know that a Smiths watch also made it to the Everest summit, but the brand hasn't survived in the same way that Rolex has so it feels to me that some of that heritage is lost.

If you're interested in another Explorer homage, you might like what Borealis has coming up:
Black dial:

White dial:

I'm leaning towards the white dial w/baton hands, but I'll need to see pics of the watch "in the metal" before I decide for sure. I can do without the "Mercedes" hand too.

Could do it, won't do it because I will NEVER have $6,000 sitting on my wrist.

- Snowflake (see above). When I first saw them I thought, "what's the big deal?" and "it's just a fancy quartz watch" and "why isn't there blued hands-- won't they be hard to see?"

But of course none of that is true.

- GS ****. You trade the spring drive for a cool, ultra-high beat, GMT movement and another stunning watch face (in a color that's so very different from high-end watches)

- JLC Reverso Duo Grande GMT. One of the first high-value watches I fell in love with. Two watches in one! Big date! Cool complications! Crazy long power reserve! Now discontinued, I think I'd still find one if I suddenly became a millionaire.

- AT Skyfall in blue, 39mm. It may be an all-too-common choice, but there's a reason it's one of the best GADA watches.

And if Bremont's lineup weren't so damn big, I'd lust after everything they make.
