BostonCharlie wrote:How can I test whether an unused, packaged battery is still any good? I have a few from multi-packs I bought over the years, but I don't know how old they are or even where I bought them. They have been stored indoors where the temperature is regulated.

If I was sure they were good I'd post them here.

Googling around, I find advice like this: Measure the battery's voltage with a voltmeter, and if the voltage is 90% or less of the advertised voltage then it's bad.

Is that all it takes? Thanks.
Using a multimeter! ?..?.

Yes, you can use a multimeter as a voltmeter and check the voltage. For a new battery, I would expect the voltage to be slightly higher than what is listed.I will check some of my new button cells this morning, but I know fresh AAs come in at 1.6V while they are listed as 1.5V.

Some 1.55V cells were measuring 1.58V. Anything at or above the stated voltage should be good to offer.

Thank you Animal Mother! Looks great. Can't wait to clean it up and give it some wrist time. Now I gotta go through my stuff and find something to pass on.

You are correct, the shock resistant version is out of stock just about everywhere. Here is a non shock resistant model for $30 + free shipping...offers accepted, so maybe less. viewtopic.php?p=20672#p20672

Here are some button/coin batteries. They are all in their original blister packs. Their voltages tested higher than their advertised voltages. If you're in the US and you want one or more I'll try mailing them to you. They've been stored indoors, but I don't know how old they are. (Actually I didn't test them all, just one per strip. I used tacks to puncture the packaging for testing with my DMM, so even the test batteries are still packaged.)

Energizer alkaline, A-76 / A76 / LR-44, 1.5 volt, measured 1.56 volt

Maxell alkaline, LR41, 1.5 volt, measured 1.53 volt

Energizer silver oxide, 377/376 / SR626W / SR626SW, 1.55 volt, measured 1.59 volt

Maxell alkaline, LR1120, 1.5 volt, measured 1.53 volt

UPDATE: Claimed (I had only one of these) -- Energizer 1216 / CR1216, 3 volt, measured 3.04 volt

Just to liven this post up, here is a photo from Wikipedia:

I got a solid hearty laugh from that. For those who don't know, Cyrillic was largely based on the Greek alphabet. Well played, if it was intentional.

Thank you Animal Mother for making my day when this arrived!

Polished out a few scratches on the glass and threw on the only 19mm strap I have left, a green Rios...but I think it works.

Looks great! I’m really glad it arrived ok and you like it. Second watch...ya know its not too late to get help now, before you have so many that you must custom build a cabinet to hold ‘em. ;)
