Demagnetizer Recommendations?

Post by sistem_32 »

I've come into the possession of a 1960's Wittnauer Pert-O-Graph Automatic which is running extremely fast (hours per day). I suspect that it has been magnetized as it affects a cheap compass I happen to have. Do you guys have any recommendations on demagnetizers? I see there are a few of varying size and power available on Esslinger:

https://www.esslinger.com/mini-demagnetizer/

By the way, in-line links don't seem to be working for me. Perhaps an upshot of that update gone awry?

There is very little difference among the demagnetizers out there...pretty much they are all made in the same factories in China. This one works great for me:

If you want to be really cheap frugal you could always have the cashier at Target/Walmart/Best Buy, etc, run your watch over the degausser they use to deactivate security tabs.

They may look at you kind of funny though.

After trying out one of the cheapy Chinese ones, I decided it's easier to take it to a watchmaker and get it done right. It's also generally free, assuming you have a friendly watchmaker somewhere nearby.

Thanks for all the advice! I ordered one of the $10 units off Amazon. Unfortunately, as atdegs predicted, it doesn't seem to be very effective. Judging by the watch's effect on the compass (and the fact that it's still running ludicrously fast), it has reduced the magnetization but not eliminated it. I'll keep trying, but most likely I'll ultimately take it to a watchmaker with the proper equipment.

This may be more a question of how to use it. In my experience its all about the dismount. Try this:
