Uploaded Photo Rotation

Post by PetWatch »

It would be very helfpul to be able to rotate photos once uploaded, so many photo uploads get flipped when uploaded.

How are you posting the images? Are you using the site's native attaching, using the Imgur upload or attaching via TapaTalk?

Also, what kind of device and OS are you using?

I see this problem brought up from time to time, and I'd like to narrow it down.

i get this on IOS, but a simple edit in photos before uploading (even contrast or brightness) fixes it.

I noticed this problem when I took photos with my phone, uploaded them to my Google drive, downloaded on my laptop, then uploaded to the site on my laptop.
It wasn't only on this site though. I noticed it in the other site as well

I have had the problem in my newer iPhone using the forum full editor, but not on Tapatalk. Editing the photos didn’t help. In the past day or so I haven’t seen this problem though, so I need to do some more testing.

I recall reading somewhere that issues like this happen mainly to iPhone users.

Something about EXIF orientation data being read as absolute instead of relative, or something like that. I'm going to have to do some digging and see if I can find it again.

I have a Google Pixel 4 so I use Chrome on Android. The sideways picture thing has happened to me on this site and WUS using both Imgur and Tapatalk. It apparently happens a lot on other forums as well. I thought I remember reading that it had something to do with the file size but looking it up just now it apparently is related to something called EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format). It's likely over my head but I figured out by chance how to get it to stop, so I never bothered to look into it any further. Similar to watchpalooza, I save the photo I want to post in a photo editor. The one I use is called Snapseed. Since I've done this, I've never had a sideways image. Hopefully it works for the IOS people as well. To save a photo on Snapseed:

1 - Open the Snapseed app.
2 - Click "Open" on the top left corner of your screen.
3 - Select the photo you would like to post from "recent images on phone"
4 - Edit the photo; or don't (you can skip this step)
5 - Click "Export"on the bottom right
6 - Click "Save"

Now your ready to post. Use Imgur to upload your photo if you would prefer full resolution. Or use Tapatalk if grainy photos are preferred. To upload a photo using Imgur:

1 - Using this site on Chrome, scroll down to the bottom of a thread
2 - Click the "Full Editor & Preview" button
3 - Click this Imgur icon like the one below
4 - Click "Browse" to bring up your Snapseed photos
5 - Select the photo you would like to post
6 - Click "Submit"

You could try it right here in this thread to see if it works for you.

It doesn't always happen, but frequently. I use Tapatalk on Android or Windows 10 pc. Using a photo editor as has been said usually fixes the issue but sometimes I have to edit rotate and save again. I usually use the Windows viewer editor.

This issue seemed to have been resolved after last mention. Now it's back, and computer images can't be uploaded without resizing.

Nothing has changed software-wise here, I have a hunch this is a Tapatalk issue.

What about the desktop computer upload, do I need to resize the images myself?

How are you attempting to upload them?

The attachment system is pretty limited. Please try using the Imgur method yinzburgher detailed a few posts back.
