Watch Challenge Idea Post

@AnimalMother came up with an interesting challenge to see honor the odd event that is leap year. You have to purchase an interesting or quirky watch in the month of February with some interesting restrictions. Since this can breath new life into watch hunting I think it would be nice if it became an occasional/regular thing. Maybe it is something we could do quarterly as you need
-time to sign up (1-2 weeks)
-the hunting/purchasing period (1 month sounds right as AM specified)
-delivery period (1 month maybe)
-judging period (2 weeks)

That brings you to the end of that cycle and the next challenge can be announced.

As per usual, the idea got away from me.

What other challenges could be done? I think that all challenges should be between $0 and $50

-Most watch for $nn
—could be general or a given category
-$nn watch collection
-Extended trade/flip challenge.
—You start with a small amount of money to spend and you can clean up and service whatever it is, flip or trade for several months and see what you end up with.
-Watch fasting
—You have to wear a single watch for an entire month.

I am sure there are plenty more ideas, but this could be the start of something very fun and potentially epic in nature.

Does a quarterly challenge seem like too much? Does my timeline make sense?

What watch-related challenges would you like to see in the future?

I have a feeling I might do OK with that one.

Brainstorming here:
  • Best digital (non g-shock)
  • Seikos only
  • Coolest Russian/French/German/British
  • Best looking redial or Mumbai special
  • Best strap (maybe make the limit $10; also would be hard to judge)
  • Cheapest working (3 min/day?) automatic watch

Brilliant! I haven't bought a Franken Russian watch in a while, but might make an exception for a challenge.

These are all great ideas guys. I like the Frankenwatch idea, though we might need a 2 month period after the purchasing phase so that all the watches can come in.

I also liked the cheapest auto 3 hander idea.

-No eBay, no problem (used). Thrift stores, Craig’s list, begging for castoffs from family/friends/strangers on the bus, <joke>pick pocketing</joke>... anything goes except for eBay.
-$20 Best eBay Find.
-Catch/Clean(repair)/Gift. Maybe there is a young person in your life that might enjoy a watch, but buying a new watch just makes no sense when there is so much already out there of high quality and bargain prices.

I just found a contender for most complications under $20 with 8, not sure I can do much better than that. It even has a slide rule, which is pretty cool for the price point.

Larger than Life

All watches would be sent to MoT for judging as he is our larger than life leader with the wrists to pull off large watches. How big can he go? We could find out.

-Each entry must be worn by MoT for one contiguous day during for normal waking hours. Pics or it didn’t happen!
-Minimum diameter of 47mm?
-Must be something the purchaser would never want to wear for a reason other than size.

I have a feeling this one would likely be more punishment than reward for Matt, but he claims to be OK with it. Maybe to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the site???
