This is the first Kickstarter from a new brand from the Netherlands, Gyre Watch. Their debut model, the SeaCleaner, is the world's first sports watch made out of recycled ghost fishing nets, recovered from the Indian Ocean.

Super Early Bird pricing is around $207
Early Bird pricing is around $217
Late Bird pricing is around $250
Regular pricing will be about $322

Estimated delivery is September 2020

GYRE - ˈjī(-ə)r’ - A circular or spiral motion or form / a giant circular oceanic surface current. Nowadays the term gyre is used to refer to the collections of plastic waste and other debris found in high concentrations in certain parts of these gyres.

Gyre Watches founder is Bernard Werk, a seasoned watch journalist and the owner of Watching, the oldest watch publication in The Netherlands.
Interview with Bernard from Monochrome Watches - https://monochrome-watches.com/bernard- ... ood-cause/

Every watch sold supports local fishermen and 5% of turnover will be donated to The Ocean Cleanup foundation.

The case - Local fishermen collect the ghost nets from the sea and deliver it to our recycler. For this they receive a fee, so we also contribute to the local economy. The nets are then cleaned and made into pellets. Those pellets are used in a mold for the 42mm case. With a 316L stainless steel case back for comfortable wear and protection.

The strap - We are currently working on the last steps to produce a strap made out of fishing nets. The same material as the case. The strap is currently being made entirely out of recycled plastic bottles. Non-toxic dyes are used.

We are here to stay. So if you want to buy the successor to the SeaCleaner and you can't find a good home for your former Gyre watch, we are working on a solution to 'recycle the recycled'. To make sure each Gyre watch will be recycled properly and doesn’t end up as waste. Our goal is to offer you the chance to send us your old watch (if registered beforehand) and we’ll make sure every piece will be used in one of our future products. As a ‘thank you’ we’ll give you a discount on your next watch and an honorable mention on our website.

That date window placement kills it for me, but otherwise, I really like it.

Never a fan of non 3/6/12 date placement.
But I'll give them credit for balancing the crown at 4 too.

I'm glad this got funded. Not my style at all but hopefully a "proof of concept" that paves the way for future designs.

They did already partner with Alpina on a limited edition version of the Seastrong.

The "recycled ocean plastic" from 9-12 is too much. Without that, I'd probably grab one of these just to show off.

And for me, too many different fonts on the dial as well. Too busy for its own good. I do like the idea and would love to check out the material in person one day.

TheJohnP Thanks for posting the Alpina variant. I looked into it a wee while ago and I believe they are available now in the US (as well as Europe); they were shown as out of stock earlier but that's because stock hadn't arrived in these shores.

Edit: They are not available in the US yet, at least not on their site. I looked up the wrong site duh haha!
